2001 - Our First Family Camping Trip
We had been involved in Cub Scouts for about a year when we decided to take the young men camping. I had not camped since I was a kid, and we had no equipment. I purchased a cabin tent and a propane cook stove, and we headed to Paradise Lake and Family Campground in Keeling, VA. We fished and took a short hike and spent one night there. We all enjoyed the adventure, but the bug had bitten my family. The majority of our family trips became camping trips after this.
2003 - My First Boy Scout Camp Adventure
In 2003, I took our Boy Scout Troop to Camp Powhatan in Pulaski, Virginia. All of our trips up to this point had only been for 1-2 nights and close by home. This time we were 3 hours from home and would be gone for a whole 7 day. We stayed in canvas tents, slept on an army cot, and the only time we were indoors; was when we went to the dining hall to eat. I will never forget that trip, because it started to rain on Monday, and it did not stop until Friday evening. But, we all had a great time and enjoyed every minute of our adventure. I do know that after that, our Troop went camping nearly every month of the year for several years.
2005 - Family Camping Trip to Boone
Our family decided to take a trip to Boone, NC and spend a week camping at Boone KOA Holiday Campground. Our site was really nice and we had one cabin tent with two air mattresses. They have a nice shelter with a picnic table, and we set up the kitchen there. We visited Blowing Rock, Grandfather Mountain, the Outdoor Drama, Horn of the West and Mystery Hill.
2006 - Camping at Myrtle Beach
We discovered the Kamping Kabins at KOA Myrtle Beach and we were hooked. We had a one-room cabin with a bed and table. Outside was a fire pit, picnic table and space to breathe. The bath house was only a short walk and the beach was 15 minutes away by foot. We spent that weekend just enjoying each others company and we have visited Myrtle Beach many more times since.
2007 - Rock Castle Gorge
This was one of my favorite trips with Troop 378. We camped at Rocky Knob Campground right across the Parkway from Rock Castle Gorge. Our camp was at the very bottom of the campground in a grassy grove of trees. We used our new Eureka Timberline 4 tents and made camp. We took a guided tour of Rock Castle the next day and as we went down the fire road, we were told about the different homes that used to be there. We visited this trail several times over the years, but this was my favorite trip.
2008 - Holiday Lake State Park
This was Memorial Day Weekend and the family camped at Holiday Lake State Park. We used our Timberline 4 tents, a 12 x 12 shelter over the kitchen and that was it. This kitchen box was always changing based on our needs.
We visited Monticello and Appomattox that weekend and had a wonderful time.
My favorite time is spent with these folks around the campsite, memories that last a lifetime.
My lifetime traveling companion that God blessed me with!! She is the best!!
2010 - Rocky Knob Campground
This was an overnight trip at Rocky Knob on the Parkway. We tested the "van camping" experience while there and it was ok, but I like a tent better. I did a lot more campfire cooking that weekend and it was enjoyable.
2011 - Wood Badge
Wood Badge Camp in 2011 was two weekends at Camp Ottari in Pulaski Virginia. I spent a total of 6 days with these gentlemen. We were the Beaver Patrol and we became good friends and made lots of memories. You can read about my project for Wood Badge S7-599-11 here.
2012 - Myrtle Beach State Park
This was our first trip to Myrtle Beach State Park, but not our last. What I remember most about this trip was how hot and humid it was at night. I was in the 90's and would not cool off until about 1am, made it hard to sleep in tents.
