This was our base camp for the week as we visited 4 other state parks in the area. We arrived on Saturday, October 11 and set up our camp. We were very pleased with the large site, and I do mean large.
That evening we just rested around the campfire and ate our smore for the night before turning in.
Sunday, October 12 2025
Sunday is our day for worship and we spent the morning at Providence Baptist Church in Harrisonburg Virginia with my son and his lovely wife. Afterward we drove to Buccess before heading back to base camp.
Monday, October 13 2025
This morning we had pancakes, scrambled eggs and bacon for breakfast.
Today our plan was to visit Sky Meadows State Park and you can read about that trip here.
On the way back to base camp, we stopped at the Apple House. We picked up some donuts, and they are really good, and did a little shopping.
Back at camp, we fixed a supper of chicken kabobs, mashed potatoes and a tossed salad. Of course we had one of the donuts for dessert.
After a nice evening around the fire, we went to bed.
Tuesday, October 14 2025
I was up unusually early this morning and went for a walk around the campground. It was very peaceful and quiet. Little did I know I was in for a rough "road" ahead, because this day was one we will not soon forget.
We had a breakfast bowl this morning which included scrambled egg, turkey sausage, and cauliflower rice, with a donut on the side.
I have a device that read the check engine codes and it was telling me that I had a misfire in cylinder 1 on my engine. I Googled "mechanic" and "towing" on my phone and the first and closest one that came up was Brian Omps Towing & Repair. I called the number and spoke to Thaddeus on the phone. He was very kind and considerate of my situation and suggested I drive the 20 miles to their shop. We did and halfway there, the skip stopped, but we kept going. They were able to take us in right away and replace the fouled plug on our truck and charged us a fair price. We were in and out in 2-1/2 hours, and I was extremely grateful. We continued on to Sweet Run State Park and hiked our trial. We had planned to stop in Harper Ferry, but ran out of time due to the mechanical problem.
For supper this evening we had top sirloin steak, green beans, baked potato and jalepeno corn muffins. It was a nice ending to a rough day and we were thankful that it was not worse.
Wednesday, October 15 2025
Yesterday, mechanical troubles. This morning, appliance troubles. The camp stove we have been using for over 20 years, decided to quit working. After several attempts to resolve the issue unsuccessfully, we cooked inside the camper. We try not to cook inside, if we can help it, for several reasons. First the space is small, you have to run the fan overhead to keep from setting off the smoke alarm and we don't want the smell of food attracting rodents.
On the way back from our trip, we stopped in the WalMart in Front Royal Virginia. We have been in a lot of WalMarts in our travels, but none as nice or clean as this one. The staff were so friendly and helpful and the place was really clean and stocked. We purchased a new Coleman Stove to replace our old one and headed back to camp.
Thursday, October 16 2025
This morning was really cool, but I cooked us some pancakes, turkey Spam and fried apples outside, but we ate inside.
We went to Seven Bends State Park today and you can read about that here.
We purchased a log splitter, last year, and it has really be a 'back' saver. I can make a bundle of wood go much further after splitting it up and I do not have to swing an axe.
I started on my memory ornament for this week. These are ornaments I paint to remember our travels and we wire them on our tree. This tree goes with us on our camping trips and is lit if we are in our site.
Friday, October 17 2025
This morning we were up early and ate a very light breakfast. We headed out for the Campground Trail and walked it until we came to Cullers Overlook.
The trail was not hard at all and was easy to follow. Once we arrived at Cullers Overlook, we stopped to enjoy the view.
You can drive to this overlook if you are not capable of walking the trail, and it is worth going to see for yourself. We left the overlook and took the Overlook Trail to the Visitor Center and toured the exhibits and shopped the store.
Back at camp, we ate a bowl of pinto beans and hot dogs for lunch. They were good after our hike.
I finished up my memory ornaments, and yes it took two for this week long trip.
That evening we had our last supper for the week and it consisted of chicken, squash and zucchini with baked potato.

Saturday, October 18 2025
Today we travel back home and we were sad to leave. We really enjoyed our stay here and plan to return soon.
Notes about Shenandoah River State Park
Sites
The sites that we observed were all large sites. You have plenty of room for your camper and vehicle, a gravel pad for setting up your kitchen, games, etc. There is trees and brush around your site so that you have a little visual privacy.
Bathroom
There is a bath house that sits between the two campgrounds. The bathroom was spacious and clean every time I entered it. This is a photo of the mens room.
Laundry
In the bath house there is also a place for you to do your laundry. Bring quarter, but if you forget them, there is a change machine inside.
Showers
The showers are on the back of the bath house and they are private with a locked door for each stall. You have a bench, several hooks and a large stall to shower in.
There is firewood available at the Visitors Center, the Camp Hosts site and is paid for using the honor system.
I will end this post the same way we end every day at camp, with a campfire. Enjoy life, it is too short to waste.
